Local Government of Bakonya

Bakonya, a little village renowned for its Arpad-period church is located in the Western Mecsek, at the foot of Jakab Hill in a picturesque setting.

The majority of its population labored in agriculture until the 1950s. With the launch of uranium mining in Hungary and the opening of a uranium mine in the vicinity of Bakonya most of its population became a miner or started working in the service sector supporting the uranium mine. Following the closure of the mine in 1989 the village was hit by recession, causing social and economic tensions amongst its population.

The primary aim of the local government of Bakonya is to improve the quality of life of its local community. Along this objective it strives to preserve the character of its villagescape, it supports the celebration and passing on of deep-rooted local traditions and seeks new ways for a positive and promising future.

Its ideal location (beautiful natural surroundings, woods and hills of the Mecsek Mountains criss-crossed by waymarked footpaths) positions the village as a destination of high potential for active and rural tourism. The local government has recognized this advantage, and by joining Baranya Greenway and undertaking the renovation and conversion of an old building into an ecotourism exhibition space it made a significant step towards this direction. They hope that significant tourist flow will be generated which will contribute to the local economy, to the strengthening of local community, will stimulate healthy and sustainable living and will have a positive impact on the image of the village.
